Manuela Trindade Viana

Professor at the Department of International Relations of the Pontifical Javerian University (Bogota, D.C.; Colombia). PhD in International Politics from IRI PUC-Rio and Master in Political Science from the University of São Paulo (DCP-USP). Co-founder of the blog erRante, o Internacional fora do lugar (errante.blog); and co-editor of the journal Monções. She is a researcher-collaborator of the Center on Democracy and Armed Forces (NEDEFA) at PUC-Rio; and of the Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM) at the BRICS Policy Center. Since 2017, she has been a Research Fellow at the Centre for Military Studies (CEMIS), Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University. In her research, she explores the discursive gears with which violence is organized in the world, especially in Latin America, with attention to the historical transformations of the penal apparatus invested towards the entire spectrum of social conducts understood as deviant, from common delinquency to terrorism. Her studies transit at the intersection of international political sociology, critical security studies, critical criminology and public security, and address issues such as police and military professionalization, the circulation of police and military expertise in the Americas, the security-development nexus, the multiplication/transformation of the boundaries between war and crime in contemporary (international) politics, and the selectivity mechanisms with which the penal apparatus operates.

Doutora em Política Internacional pelo IRI PUC-Rio e Mestre em Ciência Política pela Universidade de São Paulo (DCP-USP). Integra, ainda, a equipe de pesquisadores-colaboradores do Núcleo Democracia e Forças Armadas (NEDEFA) da PUC-Rio; e da Global South Unit for Mediation (GSUM) do BRICS Policy Center. Em suas pesquisas, explora engrenagens discursivas com que a violência é organizada no mundo, principalmente na América Latina, com atenção às transformações históricas do aparato penal investido em direção a todo o espectro de condutas sociais entendidas como desviantes, da delinquência comum ao terrorismo. Seus estudos transitam na interseção da sociologia política internacional, estudos críticos de segurança, criminologia crítica e segurança pública e abordam temas como profissionalização policial e militar, circulação de saberes policiais e militares nas Américas, nexo segurança-desenvolvimento, dinâmicas de multiplicação/transformação das fronteiras entre guerra e crime na política (internacional) contemporânea e mecanismos de seletividade do aparato penal.
