RECEBEU PRÊMIOS E/OU HOMENAGENS, ENTRE OS QUAIS DESTACAM-SE A GRÃ-CRUZ DA ORDEM DO MÉRITO CIENTÍFICO NACIONAL E O TÍTULO DE COMENDADOR DA ORDEM DO RIO BRANCO. ATUOU COMO ASSESSOR DO CENTRO DE GESTÃO E ESTUDOS ESTRATÉGICOS EM CIÊNCIA TECNOLOGIA E INOVAÇÃO ONDE LIDEROU ESTUDOS DE PROSPECÇÃO ESTRATÉGICA EM VÁRIAS ÁREAS DO CONHECIMENTO. ENTRE 2010 E 2015 FOI PRESIDENTE DO CONSELHO CIENTÍFICO DO INSTITUTO APAE DE SÃO PAULO. EM 2013 ASSUMIU A PRÓ-REITORIA DE PLANEJAMENTO DA UNIFESP, CARGO QUE EXERCEU ATÉ ABRIL DE 2017 FOI MEMBRO DO CONSELHO DE ADMINISTRAÇÃO DO CNPEM E MEMBRO DO CONSELHO SUPERIOR DA FUNDAÇÃO PÉTER MURÁNYI . ASSUMIU A PRÓ-REITORIA DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO E PESQUISA DA UNIFESP EM MAIO 2017. APÓS SUA APOSENTADORIA NA UNIFESP (setembro de 2018), TRABALHOU COMO PESQUISADOR DO CNPEM ENTRE NOVEMBRO DE 2018 ATÉ MARÇO DE 2020.
EM AGOSTO DE 2020, RECEBEU O TÍTULO DE PROFESSOR EMÉRITO DA ESCOLA PAULISTA DE MEDICINA / UNIFESP, ONDE ATUA COMO PROFESSOR SÊNIOR. COORDENOU O INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE CIENCIA E TECNOLOGIA EM NEUROCIÊNCIA TRANSLACIONAL (INNT) DO QUAL É, ATUALMENTE, UM DOS PESQUISADORES PRINCIPAIS. É PRESIDENTE DA COMISSÃO DE ELABORAÇÃO DO PLANO NACIONAL DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO (PNPG 2021-2030).
Esper Abrão Cavalheiro , MD, is Full Professor of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil. He is member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the International League Against Epilepsy, the International Bureau for Epilepsy and Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences from the São Paulo State. He acted as President of the National Research Council (CNPq) and as Secretary for Programs and Policies at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil. He served as President of the Brazilian National Forum of the Deans of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Neurology and Neuroscience at UNIFESP. His research activities are focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying the major neurological disorders. He has published more than 400 papers in refereed scientific journals. He was the recipient of important national and international awards such as the Grand Cross of the Scientific Merit from the Brazilian Government, Milken Award from the American Epilepsy Association and the Michael Prize from the International League Against Epilepsy. Esper Cavalheiro acted as Dean of Planning at UNIFESP from 2013-2017. He became Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in May 2017. After his retirement at UNIFESP (September 2018), he worked as researcher at CNPEM from November 2018 until March 2020. In August 2020, he received the title of Professor Emeritus of ESCOLA PAULISTA DE MEDICINA / UNIFESP.
