Paulo Rangel Rios atua na área de Engenharia Metalúrgica e de Materiais, principalmente em Metalurgia Física e Transformações de Fase. O principal interesse é o modelamento microestrutural 3-d por meio de métodos computacionais, métodos matemáticos analíticos e caracterização microestrutural 3-d. Aplicações específicas incluem cinética formal, recristalização e crescimento de grão, reações difusionais, reações martensíticas e metalurgia física dos aços.
Graduou-se em Engenharia de Metalurgia em 1978 pelo Instituto Militar de Engenharia onde obteve o grau de mestre em 1981.Obteve o Ph. D.pela University of Cambridge em 1986.Desde 1994 é professor titular da Universidade Federal Fluminense onde é o coordenador do Núcleo de Modelamento Microestrutural, NMM. Pesquisador nível 1A do CNPq.
Em 2008 recebeu o Prêmio Humboldt (Humboldt Research Award ou Humboldt-Forschungspreis) da Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. Este prêmio é um reconhecimento à contribuição dos pesquisadores cujas descobertas fundamentais, novas teorias ou "insights" tenham tido um impacto significativo na sua área de atuação. Foi membro do Comitê Assessor de Minas e Metalurgia -CA-MM em 1999 e novamente de dezembro de 2012 a junho de 2018. Atualmente é Editor do periódico Journal of Materials Research and Technology da ELSEVIER-ABM.
Paulo Rangel Rios works in the area of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, mainly in Physical Metallurgy and Phase Transformations. The main interest is microstructural modeling through computational methods, analytical mathematical methods and microstructural characterization. Specific applications include formal kinetics, recrystallization and grain growth, diffusional transformations, martensitic transformations, and physical metallurgy of steels. He graduated in Metallurgy Engineering in 1978 by the Military Engineering Institute where he obtained his master's degree in 1981. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 1986. Since 1994 he is a full professor at the Fluminense Federal University where he is the coordinator of the Nucleus of Microstructural Modeling, NMM. In 2008 he received the Humboldt Research Award (Humboldt Research Award or Humboldt-Forschungspreis) from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. This award is a recognition of the contribution of researchers whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their area of expertise. He is researcher level 1A of CNPq.He was a member of the Advisory Committee on Mines and Metallurgy -CA-MM in 1999 and again from December 2012 to June 2018. He is currently Editor of the Journal of Materials Research and Technology of ELSEVIER-ABM.
