Variluska Fragoso

Atualmente atua como líder de seu grupo independente de pesquisa no Instituto de Pesquisas Ambientais de São Paulo (IPA), investigando as relações entre diferentes níveis de diversidade - taxonômica, genética, fitoquímica e de interações - utilizando-se de várias ferramentas para análises químicas e moleculares. Usa espécies de plantas do gênero Piper como modelo para estudos em ecologia tropical, bem como as interações que estas plantas estabelecem com seus insetos herbívoros e predadores de herbívoros, em redes multitróficas. Atuou como pós-doutoranda (PDJ-CNPq) no Laboratório de Química de Produtos Naturais do Instituto de Química - USP de 2019 a 2022, sendo que este período foi precedido e seguido por duas licenças maternidades. De 2014 a 2016, atuou como pós-doutoranda no Departamento de Ecologia Molecular do Instituto Max Planck de Ecologia Química em Jena, na Alemanha, onde também obteve seu grau de doutora de 2010 a 2014. Sua formação acadêmica iniciou em 2000, onde realizou sua Iniciação Científica, Bacharelado e Mestrado no Laboratório de Fisiologia Vegetal pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biologia Celular e Molecular do Centro de Biotecnologia - UFRGS. Temas de interesse: biodiversidade tropical, espécies nativas, interação inseto-planta, ecologia química, metabolismo secundário vegetal, trabalho de campo, organismos não-modelo, ecofisiologia.

Variluska currently works as a principal investigator of her independent research group at the Institute of Environmental Research of São Paulo. She investigates the relationships between different levels of biodiversity - taxonomic, genetic, phytochemical, and interactions - using a variety of chemical and molecular tools. She is primarily focused on plants of the Piper group, an established ecological model for tropical studies, as well as the interactions that these plants establish with their associated insects - herbivores and predators of herbivores - in multitrophic networks. From 2019 to 2022, she worked at the Chemistry of Natural Products Lab. in the Chemistry Institute at USP as an independent post-graduate fellow funded by PDJ-CNPq. In the period prior to and following this fellowship, she had two maternity leaves. From 2014 to 2016, she held a post-doctoral position at the Molecular Ecology Department in the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Germany, where she also obtained her PhD in 2014. Her involvement with research started in 2000 when Variluska undertook her bachelor?s and master?s degrees at the Plant Physiology Lab. in the Graduate Program in Cell and Molecular Biology of the Center for Biotechnology at UFRGS.
