Glaucia Mendes Souza

A Dra. Glaucia Souza é Professora Titular do Instituto de Química da Universidade de São Paulo e Coordenadora do Programa FAPESP de Pesquisa em Bioenergia BIOEN. Seu laboratório concentra-se em biotecnologia, genômica, bioinformática e sustentabilidade da cana-de-açúcar. A Dra. Souza iniciou sua carreira como bióloga molecular. Seu doutorado versou sobre a decisão celular de fazer a transição do crescimento para o desenvolvimento. Ela fez pós-doutorados em genética molecular na La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation e no Baylor College of Medicine nos EUA. Atualmente, ela está desenvolvendo uma plataforma genômica para o melhoramento de cana para selecionar plantas resistentes a climas futuros e trabalhando em uma abordagem de biologia de sistemas para identificar metabólitos que possam ser de interesse para a produção de produtos químicos de base biológica e melhoria da produtividade. No tema sustentabilidade ela produz análises críticas da produção e uso de bioenergia e co-coordena a Força Tarefa da Agência Internacional de Energia para Descarbonização do Transporte. Ela participa de várias iniciativas internacionais para disseminar o conhecimento e aconselhar políticas, incluindo a Agência Internacional de Energia na Força Tarefa de Sustentabilidade da Bioenergia no contexto da Bioeconomia, a Parceria Global de Bioenergia (GBEP) e a Plataforma do Biofuturo. Ela é membro do Conselho do Scientific Committee of Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), da World Bioenergy Association (WBA), da Sociedade de Bioenergia (SBE) e membro do Editorial Board da Royal Society of Chemistry e da Global Change Biology Bioenergy. Ela é também membro do Comitê de Bioeconomia da Federação das Indústrias do Estado de São Paulo (FIESP-CONIC-COMSAUDE) e da Mentoria do Agro da SAE. Ela é uma Eisenhower Fellow desde 2009.

Dr. Glaucia Souza is a Full Professor at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of São Paulo and Coordinator of the FAPESP Bioenergy Research Program BIOEN. Her laboratory focuses on sugarcane biotechnology, genomics, bioinformatics and sustainability. Dr. Souza began her career as a molecular biologist. Her PhD focused on the cellular transition from growth to development. She did her postdoctoral training in molecular genetics at the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation and the Baylor College of Medicine in the USA. She is currently developing a genomics platform for sugarcane breeding to select plants for future climates resilience and working on a systems biology approach to identify metabolites that may be of interest to produce biobased chemicals and improve yields. . On the sustainability front, she produces critical analyzes of the production and use of bioenergy and co-coordinates the International Energy Agency Task Force on Decarbonization of Transportation. She participates in a number of international initiatives to disseminate knowledge and advise policy, including the International Energy Agency Task Force on Bioenergy Sustainability in the context of the Bioeconomy, the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) and the Biofuture Platform Technical Advisory Group. She is a member of the Board of the Scientific Committee of Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), the World Bioenergy Association (WBA), the Society for Bioenergy (SBE) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Global Change Biology Bioenergy. She is also a member of the Bioeconomy Committee of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP-CONIC-COMSAUDE) and of the Agro Mentorship of SAE. She has been an Eisenhower Fellow since 2009.
