O presente estudo investiga a presença da estética trágica na literatura de Lúcio Cardoso. A observação sistemática dos espaços narrativos sombrios construídos pelo autor para o desenvolvimento dos enredos de suas produções literárias fez surgir a seguinte hipótese: as atmosferas de intranquilidade, de mistério e de medo, somadas às personagens controversas, possuem elementos do trágico enquanto categoria estética capaz de representar a essência da condição humana: sua dualidade existencial. Com base nessa perspectiva, buscou-se, em um primeiro momento, a gênese do conceito de trágico a partir da tragédia clássica, de modo a permitir compreender as circunstâncias que favoreceram o surgimento do gênero, e, posteriormente, identificar os contextos que viabilizaram a multiplicidade de concepções de trágico na modernidade. Em seguida, passou-se à descrição dos elementos trágicos na obra de Lúcio Cardoso, com especial atenção à recorrência em que paixões antagônicas moldam as ações e o caráter das personagens, nos romances A luz no subsolo (1936) e Crônica da casa assassinada (1959).
This study investigates the presence of tragic aesthetics in Lúcio Cardoso literature. The systematic observation of the dark narrative spaces constructed by the author for the development of the plot of his literary productions gave rise to the following hypothesis: the atmospheres of uneasiness, mystery and fear, intensified to the controversial characters have elements of the tragic as an aesthetic category capable of representing the essence of the human condition: existential duality. Based on this perspective, we tried to, at first, the genesis of the tragic concept from the classic tragedy, in order to understand the circumstances that favored the emergence of the genre, and followed by identification of the contexts that enabled the multiplicity of conceptions of tragic in modernity. The description of the tragic elements in Lucio Cardoso's work was then given, with special attention to the recurrence in which antagonistic passions shape the actions and character of the Cardosian characters in the novels A luz no subsolo (1936) e Crônica da casa assassinada (1959).
