A presente dissertação enfoca o papel dos meios de transportes como elementos participativos da produção do espaço urbano e da sua organização espacial, adotando o transporte metroviário na Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro como objeto de análise. Logo, a dissertação em tela tem por objetivo principal a análise da formulação dos projetos da rede atual do metrô carioca, bem como dos projetos de expansão existentes sob a perspectiva dos critérios estabelecidos pelo planejamento urbano, consubstanciado em suas políticas públicas, no delineamento das linhas concebidas e dos fatores da organização interna da Metrópole do Rio de Janeiro que condicionaram a elaboração de tais projetos. Primeiramente, a realização do estudo sobre o transporte metroviário no Rio de Janeiro se justifica uma vez que a implementação deste modal de transporte representou modificações significativas no espaço urbano da Metrópole Fluminense, alterando as funções das localidades pré-existentes, bem como interferindo diretamente no valor do solo. Por outro lado, as políticas públicas de transporte urbano são primordiais na reorganização das cidades face às novas demandas geradas pelo capitalismo em sua faceta contemporânea. Além disso, a relevância desta dissertação também se evidencia no fato de que a problemática dos transportes urbanos na Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro tem se agravado acentuadamente, haja vista que, desde a década de 1950, verifica-se o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas de transporte urbano voltadas para a construção de uma infra-estrutura viária, privilegiando, inclusive, o transporte particular em detrimento do transporte público. Em contrapartida, nos últimos anos, os projetos de expansão do transporte metroviário entraram novamente em voga na sociedade carioca, não somente em virtude do agravamento da situação dos transportes, mas, sobretudo, pela realização do Pan Americano de 2007 e tendo em vista as tentativas futuras de candidatura da Cidade Maravilhosa aos Jogos Olímpicos, os quais demandam investimentos significativos na infra-estrutura urbana.
The current dissertation focus the functions of the means of transportation as important elements in the urban space production and or ganization, adopting the Rio de Janeiro s subway system as subject. Then, the main objective of this dissertation consists in the analysis of the actual Rio de Janeiro s subway network and the present expansion plans in relationship with the urban planning criterions in the conception of those subway s lines and considering the metropolis urban organization factors which conditioned the elaboration of those projects. First, the accomplishment of the study in course about the Rio de Janeiro s subway network is justified as the implementation of this mean of transportation resulted in deep modifications in the Rio de Janeiro metropolis urban space, changing the functions of the pre-existents localities, as well as interfering straightly in the land worth. In spite of that, the urban transport plans are primordials in the city s reorganization in view of the new demands created by the Capitalism actually. Beyond that, the relevance of this dissertation is shown in the fact of the Rio de Janeiro s urban transportation problematic has been drastically aggravated, considering that, since the 1950 s, the development of the local politics has been guided to built streets infrastructure in favor of the automobile transportation in detriment of public transportations. In other hand, in last few years, the subway network s expansion plans are over again in vogue in carioca society, not only because the problems with the local means of transportation are getting worse, but, mostly, take into account the Pan American Games 2007 and the futures attempts of Rio de Janeiro s bid to hold The Olympic Games, which demand major investments in local urban infrastructure.
