José Carlos Bozelli Junior

I have a bachelor degree in Chemistry (UNICAMP, 2008). Following my undergrad studies, I obtained my master and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry at the University of São Paulo (2011 and 2015). During my Ph.D. I was a visiting student at Dr. Epand´s laboratory at McMaster University (2014). Currently, I´m a Post-doctoral fellow at Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, McMaster University (fellowship from the science without boarders programme). My skills range from chemistry of molecules (and macromolecules) to cell biology with major skills in biochemistry with emphasis in biophysics. Membrane function, structure, and dynamics has long been the main focus of my studies (master, Ph.D., and post-doctoral). In the present, my studies envision understand the role played by phospholipid asymmetry in membrane function, structure, and dynamics (a property of biological membranes long known to exist, but poorly understood so far). We are using a bottom-up approach by employing model membranes to specifically address the role of phospholipid asymmetry in a important biological problem, named mitochondria outer membrane permeabilization (intrinsic pathway of apoptosis). Most importantly, all the learning during the years is actively shared with others by suppervising undergrad students on their thesis projects, teaching assistant experiences, and seminars.
