Chefe do Departamento de Química no biênio 2022-203, com mandado iniciado em 15 de dezembro de 2021.Natural de Além Paraíba, MG, é graduado em Química pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV, 1981), mestre em Agroquímica pela UFV na área de Físico-Química (UFV, 1986) com aperfeiçoamento em Química de Produtos Naturais (UFMG, 1993) e Ph.D. pela Universidade de Reading (Inglaterra, 1991), na área de Síntese Orgânica, sob a orientação do Professor John Mann. Realizou estágio de pós-doutoramento na Universidade de Oxford (Inglaterra, 2009) no laboratório do Professor Timothy J Donohoe. Iniciou sua carreira acadêmica como docente do Departamento de Química da UFV em 1983, e 1998 ate novembro de 2012 foi Professor Titular de Química Orgânica.Na UFV participou em diversos Conselhos e Câmaras, com destaque para: Conselho da Editora UFV, Conselho de Pós-Graduação, Conselho Departamental. Foi membro da Comissão Coordenadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Agroquímica de 1992 a 2012, tendo sido coordenador do Programa por dois mandatos. Em 2006 coordenou a elaboração do projeto para a implantação do Doutorado em Agroquímica, aprovado pela CAPES com Conceito 5. No período de 2006 a 2008 coordenou a expansão do Programa de Agroquímica que passou de 27 alunos (média dos últimos 15 anos) para aproximadamente 70 quando deixou a coordenação. Foi Diretor de Relações Internacionais da UFV (2010-2011). Fora da UFV participou como membro da Câmara de Ciências Exatas e dos Materiais (CEX) da FAPEMIG (2004-2008), tendo sido presidente desta Câmara por um mandato. É revisor de diversas revistas científicas nacionais e estrangeiras. Atua como consultor Ad Hoc de agências de fomento à pesquisa destacando-se: CNPq, CAPES, FAPEMIG, FAPESB, FAPEMT, etc.Criou o Laboratório de Análise e Síntese de Agroquímicos (LASA) em 1992, tem sido seu coordenador ate 2012. Vem desenvolvendo projetos de pesquisa financiados por agências governamentais e empresas privadas. Implantou na UFV a linha de pesquisa de Síntese Orgânica, que conta hoje com vários professores e é referência nacional e internacional. Pesquisador do CNPq desde 1992, publicou mais de 300 artigos científicos nas áreas de Síntese Orgânica, Química de Produtos Naturais, Óleos Essenciais, Química de Papel e Celulose, em revistas nacionais e estrangeiras. Orientou e co-orientou mais de 250 estudantes de graduação, mestrado e doutorado e pós-doutorandos. Foi pesquisador visitante nas Universidades de Reading e Warwick, na Inglaterra. É sócio da Sociedade Brasileira de Química desde 1978, membro da Royal Society of Chemistry (Inglaterra) desde 1989 e também membro afiliado da International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) desde essa data.Dentre as principais contribuições para o desenvolvimento da química destacam-se: síntese de dezenas de novas substâncias bioativas; publicação do primeiro trabalho sobre atividade antimalarial de ozonídeos; descoberta de uma nova metodologia para a reação de cicloadição [4+3]; descoberta de vários produtos naturais novos.Além de autor dos livros: INTRODUÇÃO À QUÍMICA ORGÂNICA, publicado inicialmente pela Editora UFV (1998) e posteriormente pela Pearson Education do Brasil (2004 1 edição; 2011, 2 Edição). Esse livro é amplamente utilizado por Universidades Brasileiras, tendo em 2011 alcançado o mercado Africano. He was a member of the Coordinating Committee of the Graduate Program in Agrochemistry from 1992 to 2012, having been coordinator of the Program for two terms. In 2006 he coordinated the elaboration of the project for the implementation of the Doctorate in Agrochemistry, approved by CAPES with Concept 5. In the period from 2006 to 2008 he coordinated the expansion of the Agrochemistry Program, which went from 27 students (average of the last 15 years) to approximately 70 when he left the coordination. He was Director of International Relations at UFV (2010-2011). Outside the UFV, he participated as a member of the Chamber of Exact and Material Sciences (CEX) of FAPEMIG (2004-2008), having been president of this Chamber for one term. He is a reviewer for several national and foreign scientific journals.
