Graduated in Chemistry (Bachelor) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1965), Master's in Organic Chemistry from Indiana University - USA (1968) and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1976). He is currently Senior Volunteer Professor at the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Brasília and Advisor of the Graduate Program in Science Education (PPGEDUC) at the same University. He has worked in the area of Chemistry Teaching, with emphasis on the following topics: training and continuing education of teachers, experimentation in teaching Chemistry, use of popular science texts in teaching and training of scientific concepts. Honored on 05/31/2022 with the Simão Mathias Medal, by the Brazilian Society of Chemistry, for his contribution to the development of Chemistry.

Atualmente é Professor Voluntário Sênior junto ao Instituto de Química da Universidade de Brasília e Orientador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação em Ciências (PPGEDUC) da mesma Universidade. Tem atuado na área de Ensino de Química, com ênfase nos seguintes temas: formação e educação continuada de professores, experimentação no ensino de Química, uso de textos de divulgação científica no ensino e formação de conceitos científicos. Homenageado em 31/05/2022 com a Medalha Simão Mathias, pela Sociedade Brasileira a de Química, pela contribuição ao desenvolvimento da Química.
