Bacharel em Ciência da Computação pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (2007), mestre em Ciência da Computação pela PUCRS (2009) e doutor em Ciências de Computação e Matemática Computacional pela Universidade de São Paulo (2013). Foi pesquisador visitante na University of Kent, Reino Unido, entre 2012 e 2013. Recebeu os prêmios da Sociedade Brasileira de Computação (SBC) e da CAPES pela melhor tese em Ciência da Computação do país. Atualmente é membro permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Computação da PUCRS. É coordenador do Núcleo de Pesquisa em Inteligência de Máquina e Robótica (MIR) e do Machine Learning Theory and Applications Lab (MALTA). Já publicou mais de 100 artigos científicos, incluindo em periódicos e eventos de grande prestígio como IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence Conference (AAAI), IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, ACM Computing Surveys, dentre vários outros. Recebeu diversos prêmios de melhor artigo em conferências como ACM GECCO, IEEE CEC, IJCNN, FLAIRS e BRACIS. Foi vencedor por quatro vezes consecutivas do Google Research Awards for Latin America, que premia os melhores projetos de pesquisa da América Latina. Orienta alunos de mestrado e doutorado em temáticas centradas no aprendizado de máquina e na computação evolutiva, com aplicações em visão computacional, processamento da linguagem natural, processamento de áudio e bioinformática. É sócio-fundador e Diretor de Pesquisas da Teia Labs, primeira empresa de Inteligência Artificial do Rio Grande do Sul e vencedora de editais de inovação em parceria com Samsung e Shell. Por sua atuação empreendedora, recebeu o prêmio Pesquisador Gaúcho da FAPERGS em 2018, na categoria Pesquisador Empreendedor.
Dr. Barros received his BSc degree in Computer Science from UFPel (2007), his MSc degree in Computer Science from PUCRS (2009), and his PhD degree in Computer Science and Computational Mathematics from USP (2013). He was a visiting research assistant at the University of Kent, UK, between 2012 and 2013. Dr. Barros received the "Best Thesis in Computer Science Award" from both the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and CAPES, due to his outstanding PhD dissertation entitled "On the automatic design of decision-tree induction algorithms". Currently he is a member of PPGCC, where he leads the Machine Learning Theory and Applications research group (MALTA). He has published over 100 refereed papers in premier journals and conferences such as IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), AAAI, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, ACM Computing Surveys, among others. He received the best paper award in numerous occasions in conferences such as ACM GECCO, IEEE CEC, IJCNN, FLAIRS, and BRACIS. His research project received the Google Research Awards for Latin America in three consecutive editions. He supervises MSc and PhD students in topics related to Machine Learning and Evolutionary Computation, with applications to computer vision, natural language processing, audio processing, and bioinformatics. He is co-founder and Research Director of Teia Labs, the first Artificial Intelligence startup of Rio Grande do Sul.
