Leandro Grassi de Freitas

Leandro Grassi de Freitas is an Agricultural Engineer graduated from the Federal University of Viçosa (1987), has a Master's degree in Plant Pathology from the Federal University of Viçosa (1991) and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology - University of Florida (1996). He is currently Full Professor at the Department of Plant Pathology (Capes level 7) at the Federal University of Viçosa, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate students. He is a member of the UFV intellectual property commission. He coordinates the BIONEMA Laboratory at the Institute of Biotechnology Applied to Agriculture - BIOAGRO. He is the leader of the Biological Control of Nematodes Research Group, at CNPq. Develops research on the mode of action, efficiency and interaction of microbial agents with each other and with cultivated plants and the environment. In 2006, the company Rizoflora Biotecnologia incubated at the Technological Center of Viçosa - CENTEV. In 2008, it received financial support from the Criatec seed capital fund from BNDES and built the Rizoflora factory in the Technological Park of Viçosa (TecnoPark), where it developed the RIZOTEC nematode biological control product. The product was registered with ANVISA, IBAMA and MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) in 2016. Soon after, the multinational company Stoller became a partner in Rizoflora and today distributes the product throughout Brazil, to replace chemical nematicides in soybean, corn, vegetables and fruit crops. Leandro Grassi de Freitas é Engenheiro Agrônomo formado na Universidade Federal de Viçosa (1987), tem mestrado em Fitopatologia pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (1991) e Ph.D. em Plant Pathology - University of Florida (1996). Atualmente é Professor Titular do Departamento de Fitopatologia (Capes nível 7) da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, onde leciona para estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação. É membro da Comissão de Propriedade Intelectual da UFV. Ele coordena o Laboratório BIONEMA no Instituto de Biotecnologia Aplicada à Agropecuária - BIOAGRO. É líder do Grupo de Pesquisa Controle Biológico de Nematoides, do CNPq. Desenvolve pesquisas sobre modo de ação, eficiência e interação de agentes microbianos entre si e destes com as plantas cultivadas e o meio ambiente. Em 2006 incubou a empresa Rizoflora Biotecnologia no Centro Tecnológico de Viçosa - CENTEV. Em 2008 conquistou aporte financeiro do fundo Criatec de capital-semente do BNDES e construiu a fábrica da Rizoflora no Parque Tecnológico de Viçosa (TecnoPark), onde desenvolveu o produto de controle biológico de nematoides RIZOTEC. O produto conseguiu o registro na ANVISA, IBAMA e MAPA (Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento) em 2016. Logo após, a empresa multinacional Stoller entrou de sócia na Rizoflora e hoje distribui o produto em todo o Brasil, para substituir os agrotóxicos nematicidas nas culturas da soja, milho, hortaliças e fruteiras.
