Dr. Omar Lupi M.D., M.Sc, Ph.D
Dr. Omar Lupi received his undergraduate and medical degree from Rio de Janeiro University (1985-1990) followed by residency training in Dermatology at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1991-1993). Received his MSc (1995) and PhD (1998) in Dermatology, specializing in viral infections. He completed one year of post-doctoral training at Sealy Center for Vaccine Development, at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), in Galveston/Texas (2001), with a special training in molecular biology and immunology.
Between 1996 and 2009 he was the coordinator of the residency in Dermatology of Policlinica Geral do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro/Brazil), training six new dermatologists each year. He serves as Adjunct Professor of Dermatology at Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio) since 2007 and he is the vice-chaiman of the Immunology Sector at the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital/Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Between 1998 and 2006, he is also the Chairman and Titular Professor of Dermatology at UNIG (Rio de Janeiro/Brazil). He served on the Medical Faculty of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 1998 as a physician and postgraduate professor of Dermatology. He is on the editorial board of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, the official publication of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, where he served as vice-president (2007-2008) and president (2009-2010). He is also the recipient of the ?Young Dermatologists Award? (1998) from CILAD (Ibero Latin-American Council of Dermatology).
He has published more than 100 scientific papers and 45 book chapters, with special interest in dermatovirology, sexually transmitted diseases and skin cancer. He is also the editor of 3 textbooks in Dermatology: the first one about human herpesvirus infection (Herpes: clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Ed Medsi, 278 pages, 1999), another on skin cancer (Skin Cancer. Ed. Medsi, 702 pages, 2000) and the third one on Tropical Dermatology (Elsevier, 710 pages, 2006).
He is a member of several dermatological entities, including the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (since 1991), CILAD (since 1997), International Herpes Management Forum (1998), European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (since 2001) and the American Academy of Dermatology (since 2001), as a international member. He is conducting research on the synthesis of new genital herpes vaccine (subunit glycoprotein vaccine against HSV-2), as well as investigating the role of prion infections and other misfolded proteins (amyloids) in Dermatology.
He presented more than 250 posters and 40 lectures in forums, courses and symposiums in many Brazilian and international meetings and congresses, including the Brazilian Annual Meeting of Dermatology (since 1994), World Congress of Dermatology (since 1990), CILAD Meetings (since 1995), Pan American Congress of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (since 1998) and the World Congress of Infectious Diseases (since 1999).
His area of expertise is in Medicine, focusing on Dermatology, acting on the following subjects: herpes simplex infections (epidemioloy and vaccines), skin cancer (sonic hedgehog pathway), virology (HPV, post-herpetic neuralgia), herpesvirus infection (HHV-8 and HTLV-1), as well as in conformational diseases realted to the skin (prions infections, amyloidosis). Is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Medicine since 2011.
Possui graduação em Medicina pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (1990), mestrado em Medicina (Dermatologia) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1995), doutorado em Medicina (Dermatologia) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1998) e pós-doutoramento pela University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston/TX entre 2001 e 2002). É professor Livre-Docente da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Uni-Rio) desde 2004. Atualmente é Professor Adjunto de Dermatologia da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Uni-Rio), Pesquisador Colaborador do BioVasc da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Docente Permanente do Curso de Pós-Graduação em Clínica Médica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), vice-chefe do Serviço de Imunologia Clínica do Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho da UFRJ, e professor Titular do Curso de Pós-graduação Médica do Instituto Carlos Chagas sendo Chefe do Serviço de Dermatologia da Policlínica Geral do Rio de Janeiro (PGRJ). Foi Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia (SBD) no biênio 2009/2010, após ocupar diversos cargos em sua estrutura societária. É vice-presidente do Colégio Ibero Latinoamericano de Dermatologia(CILAD) no quadriênio 2013-2016, presidindo o XX Congresso do CILAD em novembro de 2014. É membro do corpo editorial e parecerista (peer reviewer) de diversos periódicos nacionais e estrangeiros com destaque para o International Journal of Dermatology , - Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia , - Mycoses (Berlin) , Clinical and Experimental Dermatology e Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Tem experiência na área de Medicina, com ênfase em Dermatologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: herpes simples, câncer cutaneo, infecção por herpesvirus, dengue, viroses hemorrágicas, dermatovirologia, microcirculação cutânea e doenças relacionadas às conformações protéicas. É Membro Titular da Academia Nacional de Medicina (ANM) desde 2011.
