Formado em Engenharia Florestal pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (1985). Concluiu o mestrado em Manejo Florestal pela UFPR (1990) e cursou também o mestrado em Silvicultura e Ecologia pela Ehime University, Japão (1990). Possui doutorado (Ph.D.) em Ecologia e Manejo de Recursos Florestais pela United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Japão (1994). Possui pós-doutorado pela Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Japão (1995) em Manejo de Ecossistemas. Possui pós-doutorado em Manejo Florestal e Mudanças Climáticas na Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, pelo Programa ES - Programa de Estágio Sênior no Exterior da CAPES. É Professor Titular da UFPR, lotado no Departamento de Ciências Florestais. Pesquisador do CNPq desde 1994. Professor convidado de diversas instituições de ensino e pesquisa no Brasil e no exterior. Membro do Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC) e especialista da Convenção Quadro das Nações Unidas para as Mudanças Climáticas (UNFCCC). É autor de 26 livros e mais de 500 trabalhos técnico-científicos. Orientou mais de 100 trabalhos de pós-graduação, entre teses de doutorado, dissertações de mestrado e monografias de especialização. É parecerista de diversas instituições nacionais e internacionais. É revisor de revistas científicas indexadas internacionais, como Annals of Forest Science, Forestry, Forest Ecology and Management, Biomass and Bioenergy, Ecological Modelling, Carbon Balance and Management, Plant Ecology and Diversity, Carbon Management, Canadian Journal of Forest Research, Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, Bosque, entre outras. Tem experiência nas áreas de Florestas, Ecologia, Mudanças Climáticas, Certificações Florestais, Agropecuárias e Ambientais. É membro de sociedades cientificas, como a Associação Brasileira de Mensuração Florestal e do Fórum Paranaense de Mudanças Climáticas. É presidente e fundador da revista cientifica Biofix, além de atuar como editor associado da revista Southern Forests. Recebeu vários prêmios e condecorações na área florestal e ambiental.
