I graduated in biology from Ghent University (Belgium), and finished an MSc at the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia) and a PhD in zoology again at Ghent University. I am senior scientist at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS, Brussels, Belgium) and currently Head of Research and member of the Scientific Council of RBINS. I am guest professor at the University of Ghent (since 2001), deputy honorary professor at Shanxi University, Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China (since 2014) and guest professor in the Graduate Program in Ecology of Inland Waters (PEA) of State University of Maringá (UEM) (since 2017). I am Editor in Chief of the international journal Hydrobiologia and co-founder and Editor in Chief of the diamond Open Access journal European Journal of Taxonomy. My research interest are in aquatic ecology and evolutionary biology, especially in the field of speciation in ancient lakes and the evolution of asexual reproduction. I mostly use Ostracoda (Crustacea) as a model group for the development of my research projects.
