Eduardo Magalhães Rego

Dr. Eduardo Rego graduated in Medicine from the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto - USP (FMRP-USP) in 1988 and obtained his Ph.D. in Medicine (Clinical Medicine) from the University of São Paulo in 1997. He was a Post Doctoral Fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York (1998-2001). Upon returning to Brazil, he was nominated as Full Professor at FMRP-USP in 2010 where he worked until 2018. He is currently a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of USP (FM-USP) and coordinator of the Acute Leukemia Service of the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP). He is the Coordinator of the Hematology Services of Oncologia D'Or. His areas of interest is the hematological neoplasias, with special emphasis on the study of pathophysiology and the development of new treatment strategies for acute leukemias. Among his most cited works are: "Retinoic acid (RA) and As2O3 treatment in transgenic models of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) unravel the distinct nature of the leukemogenic process induced by the PML-RAR alpha and PLZF-RAR alpha oncoproteins" Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (2000); "Role of promyelocytic leukemia (PML) protein in tumor suppression" - Journal of Experimental Medicine (2001); "Identification of a myeloid committed progenitor as the cancer-initiating cell in acute promyelocytic leukemia" - Blood (2009) and "Improving acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) outcome in developing countries through networking, results of the International Consortium on APL" - Blood 2013). He is a Member of the Steering Committee and Coordinator in Brazil of the International Consortium of Acute Leukemias (ICAL) of the American Society of Hematology. The clinical studies developed by ICAL in Latin America aim to improve the outcomes of treatments for acute leukemias in the region and promote the scientific advancement of hematology. Prof. Rego is the Chair of International Members Committee of the American Society of Hematology and Scientific Vice-Director of the Brazilian Association of Hematology and Hemotherapy (2018/2019). He is Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research; Deputy Editor of Hematology, Transfusion and Cell Therapy Journal (HTCT) and Associate Editor of the Annals of Hematology.
O Dr. Eduardo Rego se formou em Medicina pela Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) em 1988 e obteve seu doutorado pela mesma Instituição em 1997. A seguir fez seu pós-doutorado no Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center de Nova York (1998-2001) no laboratório do Dr. Pier Paolo Pandolfi e publicou diversos trabalhos sobre as bases moleculares da leucemia promielocícitica aguda, com destaque para seus artigos nos periódicos PNAS (2000); J Exp Med (2001), Science (2003) e Nature (2008). Foi aprovado no concurso para Professor Titular da FMRP-USP em 2010, onde trabalhou até 2018. Atualmente, é Professor Titular da Faculdade de Medicina da USP (FM-USP), Coordenador do Serviço de Leucemias Agudas do Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo (ICESP) e dos Serviços de Hematologia da Rede D'Or e Pesquisador do Instituto D´Or de Pesquisa e Ensino (IDOR). Suas áreas de interesse são as neoplasias hematológicas, com ênfase especial no estudo da fisiopatologia e no desenvolvimento de novas estratégias de tratamento para leucemias agudas.Foi um dos membros fundadores do Consórcio Internacional de Leucemias Agudas (ICAL) da Sociedade Americana de Hematologia que desenvolve estudos clínicos e translacionais sobre leucemias agudas. O Prof. Rego é Presidente do Comitê de Membros Internacionais da Sociedade Americana de Hematologia e Diretor Científico da Associação Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia. Ele é o Editor Sênior do periódico Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research; Editor Adjunto do Hematology, Transfusion and Cell Therapy Journal (HTCT) e Editor Associado dos Annals of Hematology.
