Holds a degree in Agronomy from the University of Passo Fundo (1977), a Master's degree in Agronomy (Phytotechnics) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1980) and a PhD in Genetics from the University of California at Davis (1992). From August 2016 to February 2017 he held a Senior Internship at the University of California, at Berkeley. At the Rachel Carson Center - Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) and the Deutsches Museum, Germany, he developed activities related to the project The role of Isabella grapevine in the Brazilian vitiviculture from August 2019 to February 2020. He is a Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina since 1979, and full professor since 1993. For the Agronomy course, he teaches Plant Breeding and Biotechnology. In the Graduate Program in Plant Genetic Resources, he teaches the subjects Conservation of Genetic Resources and Population Genetics. In the last 30 years, they have been carrying out studies and advising undergraduate and graduate students related to (i) Domestication of Acca sellowiana, also known as feijoa or guava-serrana; (ii) genetics and plant breeding, (iii) phylogeny and phylogeography of native plants; (iv) biosafety and biohazards from GMOs and (v) characterization of the effects of pesticides on eusocial bees. Since 2012 he has been integrated into the vine and wine research network focusing on genetics and vine breeding to combine disease resistance and wine quality. At UFSC he held the following positions: Chair of the Plant Science Department, Representative of the CCA in the University Council; Member of the Fiscal Council of the University Research and Extension Foundation; Technical Teaching Coordinator ? PREG and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Plant Genetic Resources. Within the scope of Scientific Societies, he was Regional Secretary (SC) of the Brazilian Society of Genetics and Regional Secretary (SC) of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science. In government agencies he was Manager of Plant Genetic Resources at the Ministry of the Environment, member of the National Technical Commission on Biosafety (CTNBio) and a member of the Agrobiodiversity Study Group (GEA) of the Ministry of Agrarian Development. Between 2013 and 2017 he taught courses and supervised master's students in the Master's Course in Conservation and Use of Plant Genetic Resources, at Universidade Agostinho Neto, Angola. Since 2019, he coordinates the Sub-project Characterization, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity that is part of the International Graduate Project (PrInt), funded by CAPES.

De agosto de 2016 a fevereiro de 2017 realizou Estágio Senior na University of California, at Berkeley. No Rachel Carson Center - Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) and the Deutsches Museum, Germany, desenvolveu atividades relacionadas ao projeto The role of Isabella grapevine in the Brazilian vitiviculture de agosto de 2019 a fevereiro de 2020. É Professor da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina desde 1979, e professor titular desde 1993. Para o curso de Agronomia leciona disciplinas de Melhoramento de Plantas e Biotecnologia. No Programa de Pós-graduação em Recursos Genéticos Vegetais ministra as disciplinas Conservação de Recursos Genéticos e Genética de Populações. Nos últimos 30 anos vêm realizando estudos e orientando estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação relacionados com a (i) Domesticação da Acca sellowiana, também conhecida por feijoa ou goiabeira-serrana; (ii) genética e melhoramento vegetal, (iii) filogenia e filogeografia de plantas autóctones; (iv) biossegurança e biorriscos de OGMs e (v) caracterização dos efeitos de pesticidas em abelhas eussociais. Desde 2012 se integrou na rede de pesquisa com videira e vinhos com foco em genética e melhoramento de videiras para combinar resistência a doenças e qualidade do vinho. Na UFSC assumiu os seguintes cargos: Chefe do Departamento de Fitotecnia, Representante do CCA no Conselho Universitário; Membro do Conselho Fiscal da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e Extensão Universitária; Coordenador Técnico de Ensino ? PREG e Coordenador do Programa de Pós-graduação em Recursos Genéticos Vegetais. No âmbito das Sociedades Científicas foi Secretário Regional (SC) da Sociedade Brasileira de Genética e Secretário Regional (SC) da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência. Em órgãos governamentais foi Gerente de Recursos Genéticos Vegetais do Ministério do Meio Ambiente, membro da Comissão Técnica Nacional de Biossegurança (CTNBio) e membro do Grupo de Estudos em Agrobiodiversidade (GEA) do Ministério de Desenvolvimento Agrário. Entre 2013 e 2017 foi ministrou disciplinas e Orientou estudantes de mestrado no Curso de Mestrado em Conservação e Utilização de Recursos Fitogenéticos, na Universidade Agostinho Neto, Angola. Desde 2019, coordena o Sub-projeto Caracterização, conservação e uso sustentável da biodiversidade que é parte do Projeto de Internacional da Pós-Graduação (PrInt), financiado pela CAPES.
