José Vicente Santos Mendes

BA's in Portuguese and English Languages and Literatures from Juiz de Fora Federal University, MG, Brazil. Master's in Theoretical Linguistics from Sophia University (Jouchi Daigakuin) Tokyo, Japan. PhD in Cognitive Science from Hamburg University, Germany. I have been a just-doctor CAPES scholarship holder at the Master's Program in Cognitive Linguistics at Juiz de Fora Federal University, and, while I was working there, I have been for one month as a visiting scholar to Tufts University, Medford, MA, under Prof. Ray Jackendoff, in order to deepen my understanding of his parallel architecture model, and to strenghen the cooperation between my home university and the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts. I have been a professor on a voluntary basis at the Department of Japanese at Rio de Janeiro Federal University, while my Master's degree from Tokyo was being revalidated by a comission at that University. I have worked on a tenure track at Rio Grande do Norte State University, where I have been the Head of a Research Group registered at the National Scientific Research Council called Grupo de Pesquisa em Lingüística e Literatura (Research Group in Linguistics and Literature, with 4 research lines: cognition, applied linguistics, literature and society, and argumentation/utterance studies. As a former adjunct professor on a tenure track at Viçosa Federal University, Brazil, I was a member of 2 research groups registered at CNPq and about to register a Group of Research on Cognitive Studies with my colleagues Prof. Dr. Aparecida de Araújo Oliveira and Prof. Dr. Michelle Nave Valadão. Nowadays I am a member of the Research Group Life Histories and Interdisciplinary Dynamics, at UFSB. My major research interests include cognitive science/linguistics (mainly the mental lexicon from a Frame Semantics point of view), philosophy of mind, the multimodality in verbal semiosis in natural languages, applied linguistics, artificial intelligence (mainly the natural language processing ability of the so called intelligent machines in man-machine oral interaction) and primatology (especially the communication systems of the great apes from an evolutionary perspective apes/men ancestor > homo sapiens), and biographies as tools that help constitute the identity of (foreign) language learners. Vice-coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Licentiate in Languages, Codes and their Technologies on Paulo Freire campus, in Teixeira de Freitas, from September 2015 to May 2017. Nowadays vice-coordinator of the same Interdisciplinary Licentiate on Sosígenes Costa campus, in Porto Seguro. Currently professor of English at Southern Bahia Federal University.

possui graduação em Letras Português/Inglês e respectivas Literaturas pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, MG (1992). Vivenciou intercâmbio nos Estados Unidos (1988-1989) intercalando os semestres da dupla Licenciatura com estudos em Harvard University, MA e Portland State University, OR. Tem mestrado em Lingüística Teórica - Sophia University, Tóquio (1998) e doutorado em Lingüística Geral/Cognitiva - Universität Hamburg, Alemanha (2005). Foi bolsista Capes/Prodoc recém-doutor da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, na linha de pesquisa Gramática, Cognição e Interação, no então Mestrado em Lingüística da referida IFES. Pesquisador visitante do Center for Studies of Cognition (Tufts University, Medford, MA), por 1 mês em 2006, sob supervisão de Ray Jackendoff. Foi professor concursado de língua inglesa da Universidade Estadual do Rio Grande do Norte, onde liderou o GPELL (Grupo de Pesquisa em Lingüística e Literatura), tendo desenvolvido pesquisa na linha Linguagem e Cognição, que interrompeu por sua mudança para a UFV e conseqüente extinção da linha. Ainda se mantém membro do GPELL, porém afiliado à linha Ensino de Línguas. Enquanto professor do Departamento de Letras e Artes da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, foi membro do Grupo de Pesquisa CEALIN (Crenças no Ensino e Aprendizagem de Línguas) e do Grupo de Pesquisa Estudos em Lingüística e Lingüística Aplicada: Linguagem, Sociedade e Cognição.Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Línguas Portuguesa e Inglesa, Lingüística, e Ensino de Línguas. Atualmente integra o Grupo de Pesquisa Histórias de Vida e Dinâmicas Interdisciplinares, na UFSB. Os objetos de maior interesse de pesquisa hoje são a a linguística cognitiva, em especial a multimodalidade da semiose verbal nas línguas naturais, os sistemas de comunicação dos grandes símios, a interação homem-máquina, a linguística aplicada principalmente ao ensino de inglês como língua estrangeira, e as biografias enquanto constituidoras da identidade dos aprendizes de línguas. Foi vice-coordeanador da Licenciatura Interdisciplinar em Linguagens do campus Paulo Freire, em Teixeira de Freitas, de setembro de 2015 a maio de 2017, e atualmente é o vice-coordeandor da mesma Licenciatura Interdisciplinar no campus Sosígenes Costa, em Porto Seguro. Professor adjunto da Universidade Federal do Sul da Bahia.
