Thaisa Storchi-Bergmann

Doutora em Física (na área de Astrofísica) pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1987), fez pós-doutorado na Universidade de Maryland (1991) e no Instituto do Telescópio Espacial (1991, 1994), e estágios sênior no Rochester Institute of Technology (2005) e Harvard/Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (2014). Atualmente é Professora Colaboradora da Pós-Graduação do Instituto de Física da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Chefe do Grupo de Pesquisa em Astrofísica. É membro titular da Academia Brasileira de Ciências ABC, bem como da Academia de Ciências do Mundo em Desenvolvimento TWAS. Em 2015, ganhou o prêmio L'Oreal/UNESCO Para Mulheres na Ciência. Presta assessoria científica à Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo FAPESP, CAPES, CNPq e revistas científicas Astrophysical Journal, Astronomical Journal, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Astronomy e Astrophysics, Ciência Hoje e Revista da FAPESP. Atua em comitês de alocação de tempo de grandes telescópios, como do Telescópio Espacial Hubble, Atacama Large Milimetric Array (ALMA), European Southern Observatory (ESO) e Gemini. É coordenadora do projeto PRONEX/FAPERGS ASTROSUL. É presidente da Comissão X1 da IAU (International Astronomical Union) - Supermassive Black Holes, Feedback and Galaxy Evolution. É membro do Board do International Basic Sciences Program da UNESCO. Atua em pesquisa na área de Astrofísica Extragaláctica, em particular no estudo dos processos de alimentação e "feedback" de Buracos Negros Supermassivos (BNS) em galáxias. Criou o grupo de pesquisa AGNIFS, que utiliza Espectroscopia de Campo Integral em grandes telescópios para mapear a cinemática estelar e do gás no entorno de BNS. Outros temas de sua pesquisa são: galáxias ativas, galáxias starburst, região nuclear de galáxias, estudando as propriedades do gás emissor e da população estelar.

PhD in Physics (research area Astrophysics) by UFRGS (1987), did post-doctoral studies at the Astronomy Department of the University of Maryland (1991) and at the Space Telescope Science Institute (1994, 1996), and was a visiting Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology (2005) and Harvard/Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (2014). Presently is Professor at the Physics Institute of UFRGS, where she is the Head of the Astrophysics Research Group. She is member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences ABC and of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World TWAS. In 2015, she won the L'Oreal/UNESCO award For Women in Science. She has been acting in time allocation committees of observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope, Atacama Large Milimetric Array (ALMA), European Southern Observatory (ESO) and Gemini. Presently member of the Board of UNESCO's the International Basic Sciences Program. Coordinator of the PRONEX project ASTROSUL in the south of Brazil. She is the President of Commission X1 of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) - Supermassive Black Holes, Feedback and Galaxy Evolution. Her main topic or research is the study and of the feeding and feedback processes of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH) in the center of galaxies. She is the founder of the AGNIFS group (AGN Integral Field Spectroscopy) using Integral Field Spectroscopy at large telescopes to investigate the kinematics of stars and gas in the vicinity of SMBHs. She also does research in the following subjects: active galaxies, starburst galaxies, and nuclear region of galaxies, where she studies the properties of the emitting gas and stellar population.
