Full Professor at the Paulista School of Medicine at the Federal University of São Paulo (EPM-UNIFESP). He is president of the Brazilian Association of Cell and Gene Therapy (ABTCEL-GEN) and was vice president from 2019-2021. He was co-founder of the Interdisciplinary Center for Gene Therapy (CINTERGEN) at UNIFESP, and was director of this center from its foundation in 2004 until 2010. During this period he developed the first vector used for clinical gene therapy in Brazil. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Advanced Therapies of ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency) and CTNBio (National Biosafety Commission); As a member, he participated in the creation of regulations for the use of gene therapy in Brazil. He has been a specialist representative of the National Network of Specialists in Advanced Therapies (RENETA-ANVISA) since its formation. He holds a degree in Chemistry, a Master's and a Doctorate in Biochemistry from the University of São Paulo, and a associate professorship degree in Biophysics at UNIFESP. He did a Post-Doctorate in Gene Therapy at the University of Washington in Seattle-USA between 1992-1994, then dedicated himself to this area in Brazil until today. The main lines of research are: gene therapy for ischemic and genetic diseases, cancer and DNA vaccine.

É graduado em Química, Mestrado e Doutorado em Bioquímica pela Universidade de São Paulo, e Livre-Docência em Biofísica pela UNIFESP. Fez Pós-Doutorado em Terapia Gênica na University of Washington em Seattle-EUA entre 1992-1994, depois se dedicou a essa área no Brasil até hoje.
