Andrew Macrae

Andrew has a Bachelor's degree in Natural Environmental Science - Earth Science from the University of Sheffield (1993, England) and a PhD in Soil Plant Microbe Interactions from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (1998, England). Currently, he is a Full Professor and Head of the Sustainable Biotechnology and Microbial Bioinformatics Laboratory at the Paulo Góes Institute of Microbiology, UFRJ. He was the Coordinator of the Plant Biotechnology Graduate Program from 2014-2020. Since 2014, he has been the Coordinator of International Relations at the UFRJ Health Sciences Center and a member of the University Council for International Relations (Rectorate). From 02/2020-07/2022, he was the Technical Coordinator of UFRJ,s CAPES PRINT program. With his students, he conducts research on microbial biodiversity and biotechnology in soils, water, and plants, seeking solutions, products of microbial-origin for agriculture, energy, and textile industries as well as environmental sectors. His research is motivated by the concept of "One Health" from the WHO, aligned with the principles of sustainable development of the UN. His research and teaching aim to transfer knowledge that will help improve, protect and remediate natural and anthropic environments (soils and sediments). He promotes the use of biodiversity in the management of biological systems. Andrew sees internationalization and innovation as forms of outreach and extending knowledge transfer in a connected world. He coordinates the CCS International Extension Program at UFRJ. Andrew has been a Visiting Professor at Newcastle University, England, and since 2022, he has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Western Australia, School of Agriculture and Environmental Science, and a Visiting Scientist at CSIRO (Land and Water), Australia, as well as an Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University. Andrew tem Bacharel em Natural Environmental Science - Earth Science pela University of Sheffield (1993, Inglaterra) e PhD em Soil Plant Microbe Interactions pela University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (1998, Inglaterra). Atualmente e Professor Titular e Chef do Laboratório de Biotecnologia Sustentável e Bioinformática Microbiana no Instituto de Microbiologia Paulo Góes da UFRJ. Foi Coordenador do Programa de Pós-graduação em Biotecnologia Vegetal de 2014-2020. Desde 2014 está o Coordenador de Relações Internacionais do Centro de Ciências de Saúde (Decania) da UFRJ e membro do Conselho Universitário de Relações Internacionais (Reitoria). De 02/2020-07/2022 foi Coord Tec do PRINT da PR-2 Pró-reitora de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação. Com seus alunos ele pesquisa biodiversidade e biotecnologia microbiana em solos, águas e plantas buscando soluções, produtos, probióticos de origem microbiana para os setores de agricultura, energia, indústria têxtil e o meio ambiente. Sua pesquisa e motivada pelo conceito: Saúde Única/ One Health da OMS com os princípios de desenvolvimento sustentável da ONU. Sua pesquisa e ensino buscam transferir conhecimento que ajudara melhorar e remediar ambientes naturais e antrópicos (solos e sedimentos). Pesquisas taxonômicos para conhecer, conservar e promover o uso da biodiversidade na gestão de sistemas biológicos. Andrew veja internacionalização e inovação como formas de extensão da transferência de conhecimento num mundo conectado. Ele coordena o programa de Extensão CCS Internacional da UFRJ. Andrew foi Professor Visitante na Newcastle Univeristy, Inglaterra e desde 2022 e Professor Visitante na University of Western Australia, School of Agriculture and Environmental Science, e Visiting Scientist at CSIRO (Land and Water), Australia e Adjunct Professor na Murdoch University.
