Graduated in Chemistry from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1999), Master in Cellular and Molecular Biology working with enzyme production at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2002) and PhD in Microbiology working with biofilms at Helmholtz Center for Infection Research - Braunschweig, Germany (2006). Currently Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Raw Material Production and PI of the Biofilms and Microbial diversity group at UFRGS Biotechnology Center. Head of Biotechnology Center at UFRGS. Coordinator of two Research Networks: (i) Basic and Applied Studies on Microbial Adhesion: important aspects in human health and industry, funded by FAPERGS (PRONEM) and (ii) COFECUB: Prospecting and Development of New Active Peptides and Peptidomimetics: Antibiofilm and Antitumor. Has collaborative projects with Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Denmark, France, England and Sweden. He was coordinator and manager at UFRGS of the Surface Biofunctionalization (CAPES), NANOBIOTEC-BRASIL NETWORK and the MarAtivo Network - Marine Biotechnology Notice, funded by CNPq. Organizer of the I, II and III Workshop Microbial Adhesion and Surfaces. Has experience in Microbiology, working in studies involving bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. In particular, with pathogenic biofilm control strategies; Prospecting for bioactive metabolites of microbial, plant and venoms origin and the generation of anti-infective surfaces, including assays in trans-translation system. Member of the Brazilian Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Member of INPRA - National Institute of Antimicrobial Resistance Research.
Possui graduação em Química pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1999), mestrado no tema produção de enzimas no PPG em Biologia Celular e Molecular pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2002) e doutorado no tema biofilmes ambientais em Microbiologia - Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research - Braunschweig, Alemanha (2006). Atualmente é professor titular da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, na Faculdade de Farmácia, Departamento de Produção de Matéria-Prima e Pesquisador Líder do grupo BIOFILMES E DIVERSIDADE MICROBIANA no Centro de Biotecnologia da UFRGS. Diretor do Centro de Biotecnologia da UFRGS. Coordenador de duas Redes de Pesquisa: (i) Núcleo de Estudos Básicos e Aplicados em Adesão Microbiana: aspectos importantes na saúde humana e na indústria, financiado pela FAPERGS (PRONEM) e (ii) COFECUB: Prospecção e Desenvolvimento de Novos Peptídeos e Peptidomiméticos Ativos: Antibiofilme e Antitumoral. Sócio-fundador da Regenera Moléculas do Mar. Possui projetos de colaboração com a Alemanha, Argentina, Colômbia, Dinamarca, França, Inglaterra e Suécia. Foi coordenador e gestor na UFRGS do projeto Rede de Pesquisa e Formação em Biofuncionalização de Superfícies do EDITAL CAPES, REDE NANOBIOTEC-BRASIL e da Rede MarAtivo - Edital Biotecnologia Marinha, financiado pelo CNPq. Organizador do I, II e III Workshop Adesão Microbiana e Superfícies. Tem experiência na área de Microbiologia, atuando em estudos que envolvem a adesão bacteriana e formação de biofilmes. Em especial, com estratégias de controle de biofilmes patogênicos; Prospecção de metabólitos bioativos de origem microbiana, vegetal e venenos e na geração de superfícies anti-infectivas, incluindo ensaios no sistema de trans-tradução (trans-translation).
