Thiago Henrique Mota Silva

Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq (PQ2). Professor de História da África no Departamento de História da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Professor permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. Doutor em História em regime de co-tutela entre a Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e a Universidade de Lisboa (2018). Atual coordenador do curso de História (licenciatura e bacharelado) da UFV. Em 2018, sua tese recebeu menção honrosa na segunda edição do Prêmio Internacional de Investigação Histórica Agostinho Neto, promovido pela Fundação Dr. António Agostinho Neto (Angola), Faculdade Zumbi dos Palmares (Brasil) e UNESCO. A partir de 2023, passou a integrar a equipe dos projetos -Engaging the Mosque, the Church, and the Academy in West Africa for Transformation of Society (University of Ghana, Gana); e -IberLAND, Beyond Property: Law and Land in the Iberian World, 15101850 (Leibniz University Hannover, Alemanha). É investigador vinculado ao Centro de História da Universidade de Lisboa, desde 2016. Foi professor visitante na Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Maputo, Moçambique), em 2014. Foi pesquisador do projeto SLAFNET - Slavery in Africa: a dialogue between Europe and Africa (2017-2020, Institut de Recherche pour le Dévelopment, França). Foi pesquisador bolsista Marie Sklodowska-Curie na Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal, 2019 e 2020), e bolsista Fulbright na University of Pennsylvania (Estados Unidos, 2022). Foi consultor científico da Nanjing Agricultural University (China, 2019 a 2022). É membro da Associação Nacional de História (ANPUH), Associação Brasileira de Estudos Africanos (ABE-África) e da Rede Brasileira de Estudos em História Moderna (h_moderna). Integrou o Conselho Fiscal da ANPUH/seção Minas Gerais (2018-2020) e coordenou o Grupo de Trabalho de História da África (GT-África) da ANPUH, gestões 2019-2021 e 2021-2023. Coordena o projeto "Expansão e retração islâmica na região da atual Guiné-Bissau: contornos de uma excepcionalidade oeste-africana (séculos XVIII a XX)", aprovado no Edital N 001/2021 - DEMANDA UNIVERSAL/FAPEMIG. Coordena o convênio de cooperação acadêmica entre a Universidade Federal de Viçosa e a Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Moçambique). Tem experiência de pesquisa em arquivos (Brasil, Gâmbia, França, Moçambique, Portugal e Senegal) e museus (Alemanha, Gâmbia, Guiné-Bissau e Senegal).

Professor of African and African-Latin-American History and methodologies for anti-racist History teaching at the Federal University of Viçosa (Brazil, 2018 - today). Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania (USA, 2022). Marie-Curie Visiting Scholar at the University Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegal, 2019 and 2020). Dr. Mota earned his PhD from a join PhD program between the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil) and the University of Lisbon (Portugal). His dissertation proposed an Atlantic view on the early Islamic expansion in Western Africa, the Greater Senegambia region, from early 16th to late 17th centuries.This project has dealt with Portuguese Inquisition records, Jesuit letters from African and American missions, oral sources from Senegal and Gambia institutions, among other evidences. The results of this research have appeared in global journals, like Atlantic Studies: Global Currents, and will come out in a book-lenght publication soon.Now, Dr. Mota leads a funded research project (DEMANDA UNIVERSAL/FAPEMIG - Concession FAPEMIG/DAP n. 36527059/2021) about the processes of Islamization and de-Islamization in Guinea-Bissau, between 1789-1974.Dr Mota has presented his research in many academic events around the world in countries like Brasil, China, Gambia, Germany, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Russia, Senegal, United States, among others. He has been consulting scholar at the Nanjing Agricultural University (China, 2019-2022). Currently, he is a non-resident member of the Center for History at the University of Lisbon (Portugal, since 2016).In Brazil, he coordinates the Working Group for African History, within the Brazilian National Association for History (ANPUH). At the Federal University of Viçosa, he leads the Atlantic Observatory - a research group focused on exchanges across the ocean from Africa, Americas, and Europe.
