Graduate in Medicine at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (1971), Master's in Byophysics at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1975) and Ph.D. in Human Medicine at The Georg-August Universitat Gottingen (1981). Post-doctoral stays at the MaxPlanck Institute for Chemical Biophysics in Göttingen/Germany (1988-89), at the Kyushu Institute for Technology/Japan (2000), at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Medical School of the University of Göttingen (2005) and at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Oxford, UK (August-November 2015). Since 1993 He is Full Professor for Neurophysiology and Nutrition at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Since 2003 He is permanent member of the Academy of Sciences of the Pernambuco State, Brazil. He is permanent professor in the MS. and PhD Programs for Nutrition and Biochemistry & Physiology, both from UFPE. He serves as Associate Editor of the three following scientific journals: 1) "Nutritional Neuroscience" (USA), 2) "Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience" (Switzerland) and 3) Brain Sciences (Manchester-UK). He has experience in Physiology, focusing on Neurophysiology and acting on the following subjects: (1)Neurophysiology, (2)Nutrition and physiological development, (3)Cortical spreading depression, (4)Nutrition and neurotransmiters (5) Neuropharmacology and Nutrition.
Possui graduação em Medicina pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (1971), mestrado em Ciências Biológicas (Biofísica) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1975) e doutorado em Medicina Humana - Georg-August Universitat Gottingen/Alemanha (1981). Realizou estágios pós-doutorais (1)no Max-Planck Institute for Chemical Biophysics, em Göttingen/Alemanha (1988-89), (2)no Kyushu Institute of Technology, no Japão (2000), (3) no Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Göttingen (em 2005) e (4) no Department of Pharmacology, University of Oxford, UK (Agosto-Novembro de 2015). Desde 1993 é professor titular da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, mediante aprovação em concurso público de títulos e provas com defesa de tese experimental. Foi Presidente Nacional da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurociências e Comportamento (SBNeC), no período 1999-2002. Foi eleito Membro Titular da Academia Pernambucana de Ciências em 2003. É professor permanente dos Programas de PG em Nutrição e em Bioquímica e Fisiologia, ambos da UFPE. É Editor Associado das 3 seguintes revistas: 1) "Nutritional Neuroscience" (USA), 2) "Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience" (Switzerland) e 3) Brain Sciences (Manchester-UK), nas três com a prerrogativa de conduzir o processo editorial (indicando revisores) e ao final decidir pela aceitação ou rejeição dos manuscritos. Tem experiência na área de Fisiologia e Nutrição, com concentração em Neurofisiologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: (1)Neurofisiologia, (2)Desnutrição e desenvolvimento fisiológico, (3)Depressão alastrante cortical, (4)Nutrição e neurotransmissores; (5)Neurofarmacologia e Nutrição. Tornou-se professor aposentado da UFPE em abril de 2022.
