Graduado em medicina veterinária, com mestrado em medicina veterinária pela Escola de Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais; PhD em patologia veterinária pela Texas A&M University, pós-doutorado na University of California at Davis e livre-docente pela Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP - Botucatu). Especialista em Patologia Veterinária pela Associação Brasileira de Patologia Veterinária. Realizou curso de aperfeiçoamento no Institut Pasteur - Paris. Autor de inúmeros artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais e internacionais nas áreas de patologia veterinária, fisiopatologia da reprodução e patologia/patogênese de doenças infecciosas, incluindo periódicos renomados como Nature Medicine. Co-autor do livro Patologia da Reprodução dos Animais Domésticos (Editora Guanabara Koogan) e editor do livro Patologia Veterinária (Editora Roca). Consultor ad hoc de diversos periódicos nacionais e internacionais, incluindo Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Infection and Immunity e Plos Pathogens, entre outros. Professor titular e orientador de mestrado e doutorado pela Escola de Veterinária da UFMG. Professor Visitante na University of California at Davis (2006-2007 e 2022-2023). Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq desde 2002 (atualmente nível 1A). Fellow da John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation e agraciado com a Comenda Antônio Secundino de São José e com o Prêmio Professor Paulo Dacorso Filho. Foi presidente da Associação Brasileira de Patologia Veterinária - ABPV (2009-2011), Pró-Reitor de Pesquisa da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2010-2014), Editor do Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology (2014-2017) e Diretor da Escola de Veterinária da UFMG (2014-2018).

Awarded with the ?Comenda Antônio Secundino de São José? (from the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), and the Prize ?Professor Paulo Dacorso Filho? (from the National Veterinary Medicine Council). Former president of the Brazilian Veterinary Pathology Association (2009-2011), and Dean of Research at UFMG (2010-2014). Currently, Research Fellow of the National Research Council (CNPq) - level 1A, Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology, Full Professor of veterinary pathology, and Dean of the Veterinary School at UFMG.
