He has a bachelor's degree in Forest Engineering from the Federal University of Mato Grosso (1986), a master's degree in Forest Sciences from University of Brasília (UnB) (2003), and a PhD in Ecology from the UnB (2007). He completed postdoctoral research in forest ecology at the University of Leeds, England (2012-2013). He has been a professor at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT) since 1994. He is a permanent researcher at the RAINFOR Network (University of Leeds), the Global Ecosystem Monitoring Network (University of Oxford), and the ATDN (Amazon Tree Diversity Network). He was a visiting researcher at the University of Leeds in 2010, 2016, and 2018, as well as at the University of Exeter, England, in 2015. He is a PQ1 (Productivity in Research Level 1) fellow of CNPq (The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, Brazil) and has published over 160 indexed scientific articles with more than 9400 citations (H-index on Google Scholar = 44). He served as the Coordinator of the Graduate Program (Master's and PhD) in Ecology and Conservation at UNEMAT-Nova Xavantina. He is the Director of Internationalization at UNEMAT and supervises doctoral and master's students in the Programa de Pós-Graduação (PPG) in Ecology and Conservation (UNEMAT-Nova Xavantina campus) and the PPG BioAgro (UNEMAT-Alta Floresta campus). He has expertise in forest ecology, with a focus on phytogeography, biogeochemical cycles, climate change, carbon balance, and pyrogenic carbon in agriculture.

Possui experiência em ecologia florestal, atuando principalmente em fitogeografia, ciclos biogeoquímicos, mudanças climáticas, balanço do carbono e carbono pirogênico na agricultura.
