Possui graduação em Farmácia e Bioquímica pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1976), mestrado em Microbiologia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1980) e doutorado em Microbiologia e Imunologia pela Universidade Federal de São Paulo (1989). Realizou 3 anos de pos-doutorado na Rockefeller University, New York, USA (1990-1992), estudando a regulação gênica da perfurina em linfócitos T citotóxicos. Foi pesquisadora visitante no National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London, England, na Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, USA (1994), e por 2 períodos no Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine, New York University Medical Center, New York, USA (1994 e 1998) . Atualmente é Professora Associada do Departamento de Bioquímica e Imunologia, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. É orientadora de Mestrado e Doutorado do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Bioquímica e Imunologia. Tem experiência na área de Bioquímica e Imunologia, com ênfase em Imunologia de Doenças Parasitárias e Bioquímica e Biologia Celular de Parasitas, tendo inicialmente estudado o Schistosoma mansoni e o envolvimento do anticorpo letal na imunidade à esquistossomose. Desde 1992, sua linha de pesquisa tem sido o estudo de protozoários do gênero Leishmania, sendo que os principais interesses são: 1) a busca da identidade e da função da leishporina, uma citolisina formadora de poros do parasita descrita por seu grupo; 2) a resistência do hospedeiro à leishmaniose cutânea, com foco na imunidade inata, em particular na ativação de macrófagos induzida por ligantes de TLR4, e na produção de NO e ROS na atividade leishmanicida do macrófago; 3) a morte do macrófago causada pelo parasita.
She holds a degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1976), a Master's degree in Microbiology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1980) and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the Federal University of São Paulo (1989). She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Rockefeller University, New York, USA, studying the gene regulation of perforin in cytotoxic T lymphocytes. She was a visiting researcher at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, London, England, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, USA, and Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine, New York University Medical Center, New York, USA. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Immunology, Institute of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Minas Gerais. She is a Master's and PhD's Advisor of the Post-Graduate Program in Biochemistry and Immunology. She has experience in the field of Biochemistry and Immunology, with emphasis on Immunology of Parasitic Diseases and Biochemistry and Cell Biology of Parasites, initially studying Schistosoma mansoni and the involvement of lethal antibody in immunity to schistosomiasis. Since 1992, her research line has been the study of protozoa of the genus Leishmania, and her main interests are: 1) the search for the identity and function of leishporin, a pore-forming cytolysin of the parasite described by her group; 2) host resistance to cutaneous leishmaniasis, focusing on innate immunity, in particular the activation of macrophages induced by TLR4 ligands, macrophage leishmanicidal activity, and cell death of macrophages caused by the parasite.
