Carlos Augusto Dietrich

Carlos A. Dietrich received the BS degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil, in 2002. Still during his undergraduate course at UFSM, he worked as intern at University Hospital of Santa Maria on the Image Processing Department, where he was responsible for the technical support of the new digital radiography division and for the research and development of an algorithm for the bone age estimation from digital radiographies. After that, he received his MS degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, in 2004. During this period, he worked with general purpose algorithms adapted to Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), especially with medical image (Computed Tomography) visualization algorithms. The work with general purpose algorithms on GPU also resulted on two NVIDIA awards (the top graphics card manufacturer at that time), for the second and first places on the first two NVIDIA GPU programming contests, respectively. He started his PhD also on UFRGS, in 2004, where he had the opportunity to work with deformable body simulation on GPUs, the research of agile development cycle processes (Scrum, ICONIX) applied to computer game development, and finally with isosurface polygonization algorithms. He received his PhD degree cum laude on Computer Graphics, in 2008, and also received a Google award as the top PhD Student at UFRGS - 2008 . After that, he worked from 2008 to 2010 as a Software Development Analyst at Dell Inc., where he had the opportunity to work with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) development. From 2010 to 2011 he joined the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute of University of Utah, working as a Senior Software Developer on advanced visualization algorithms. From June 2011 till now, he and some former colleagues of UofU started Modelo Inc., a UofU spin-off that develops advanced modeling and visualization solutions for Oil industry.
bachelor's at Ciência da Computação from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (2002) and master's at Computer Science from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2004). Has experience in Computer Science, focusing on Information Systems, acting on the following subjects: gpu, meshing, interaction, processamento de imagens and volumetric visualization.
