I graduated in Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2001). After completing the undergraduate degree, I worked in the Amazon region with the Health & Happiness Project (Center for Advanced Studies on Social and Environmental Promotion) by carrying out activities to prevent diseases in riverside communities in the Santarém region for about of 1 year. I completed residency training in Family Practice at FAMEMA (2005), Master's and Doctorate degrees in Public Health at UNICAMP (2006 and 2010), and professorship in Geriatrics at UNESP (2017). Currently, I work as an associate professor at the Geriatrics Division of the Internal Medicine Department of Botucatu Medical School at UNESP and as a professor in the Postgraduate Programs in Public Health (beginning in 2013) and Clinical Research (beginning in 2015) at the same institution. My main line of research is entitled "Health of Older Adults, Chronic Diseases and Palliative Care". I was responsible for the research on the cross-cultural adaptation of the Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form to Brazil, providing a foundation for the implementation of the POLST Paradigm in Brazil as a strategy to improve end-of-life care in the country through the alignment between the values and preferences of care of patients with their health treatments through Advance Care Planning. Since 2018, I have worked as a member of the board of directors of the São Paulo Section of the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SBGG) and the Bioethics Committee of the National Academy of Palliative Care (ANCP), where I contributed to the development of ANCP's position statement on Nutrition and Hydration for Patients with Advanced Dementia and a joint position statement by the ANCP and SBGG on Shared Decision Making in Palliative Care. I have also worked as an ad hoc consultant for DECIT, FAPESP, FAPDF and FAPEMIG. I have contributed as a reviewer to 24 national and international journals, including the British Medical Journal, JAMA Network Open and Palliative Medicine, having received in 2018 and 2019 the "Publons Peer Review Awards for placing in the top 1% reviewers". Since 2013 I have worked as an associate editor for Cadernos de Saúde Pública, since 2019 as a member of the editorial board of BMC Geriatrics, and since 2021 as the Section Editor of PLOS ONE for Geriatrics and Gerontology.
Possui graduação em Medicina pela UFRJ (2001). Em seguida à conclusão do curso de graduação, atuou na região amazônica junto ao Projeto Saúde e Alegria (Centro de Estudos Avançados de Promoção Social e Ambiental) através da realização de atividades de promoção e prevenção à saúde de comunidades ribeirinhas da região de Santarém durante cerca de 1 ano. Concluiu a residência em Saúde da Família junto a FAMEMA (2005), mestrado e doutorado em Saúde Coletiva pela UNICAMP (2006 e 2010), livre-docência em Geriatria pela UNESP (2017). Atualmente, trabalha como professor associado junto à disciplina de Geriatria do Departamento de Clínica Médica da UNESP e como docente dos programas de Pós-graduação em Saúde Coletiva (início em 2013) e de Pesquisa Clínica (início em 2015) da mesma instituição. Sua principal linha de pesquisa tem como título ?Saúde do Idoso, Doenças crônicas e Cuidados paliativos?. Foi o responsável pela pesquisa de adaptação transcultural do formulário Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST), onde foi construída a base para que o Paradigma POLST possa ser implantado no Brasil como uma estratégia para melhorar os cuidados de fim de vida no País através da promoção do alinhamento entre valores e preferências de cuidado de pacientes com seus tratamentos de saúde por meio do Planejamento Antecipado de Cuidados. Integra desde 2018 a diretoria da Seção São Paulo da Sociedade Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia (SBGG) e o Comitê de Bioética da Academia Nacional de Cuidados Paliativos (ANCP), tendo contribuído com a elaboração do posicionamento da ANCP sobre Nutrição e Hidratação em Pacientes portadores de Demência em Fase Avançada e de um posicionamento conjunto da ANCP e SBGG sobre Tomada de Decisão Compartilhada em Cuidados Paliativos. Atua como consultor ad hoc para o DECIT, FAPESP, FAPDF e FAPEMIG. Contribui como revisor de 24 periódicos nacionais e internacionais, incluindo o British Medical Journal, JAMA Network Open e Palliative Medicine, tendo recebido em 2018 e 2019 o ?Publons Peer Review Awards for placing in the top 1% reviewers?. Desde 2013 é editor associado dos Cadernos de Saúde Pública, desde 2019 é membro do corpo editorial do BMC Geriatrics, e desde 2021 é o Editor de Seção da PLOS ONE para Geriatria e Gerontologia.
