Orientador do quadro permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biotecnologia da UFOP (CAPES 4). Membro da Sociedade Brasileira de Microbiologia. Editor chefe da revista Brazilian Journal of Microbiology. Membro do Comitê Nacional de Pesquisas Antárticas (CONAPA) do Programa Antártico Brasileiro.
Linha geral de pesquisa: Sistemática e Bioprospecção de Fungos. Possui experiência em estudos de fungos presentes em diferentes ecossistemas tropicais do Brasil (como Cerrado, Campo Rupestre, Mata Atlântica e Amazônia) e Temperados (Patagônia, Atacama, EUA). Também atua no Programa Antártico Brasileiro (PROANTAR) em estudos de taxonomia, diversidade e ecologia de fungos da Antártica e sua utilização em processos biotecnológicos. Coordenador do laboratório temático de Microbiologia Polar do INCT da Criosfera. Chefe do Laboratório de Microbiologia Polar e Conexões Tropicais (MicroPolar) do Departamento de Microbiologia da UFMG.

General research line: Systematics and Bioprospecting of Fungi. He has experience in studies of fungi present in different tropical ecosystems in Brazil (such as Cerrado, Campo Rupestre, Atlantic Forest and Amazon) and Temperates (Patagonia, Atacama, USA). He works in the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) in studies of taxonomy, diversity and ecology of Antarctic fungi and their use in biotechnological processes. Coordinator of the thematic laboratory of Polar Microbiology of the INCT of Criosfera. Head of the Laboratory of Polar Microbiology and Tropical Connections (MicroPolar) of the Department of Microbiology at UFMG.
