Mônica Deitos Stedile Monawar

Monica Monawar holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English language and respective literatures from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, in 2007. Two years later, in 2009, she was awarded a full two-year scholarship from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) to attend the Master's in Linguistics course at PUCRS, which was concluded in 2011. Her MA dissertation concerned natural language modality in Brazilian Portuguese, English and Romanian in contrast within syntax and semantics. In March of that year she was approved 1st place in the selection process for entering the Doctorate course in Linguistics at that same institution, continuing to be advised by Professor Dr Ana Maria Tramunt Ibaños. Having been awarded for a second time a full, now four-year, scholarship by CNPq, she dedicated fully to research. Her thesis discusses theoretical aspects of indicative epistemic conditionals, pointing to potential theoretical and applied aspects related to English and Brazilian Portuguese. During her Doctorate, she was a visiting researcher at Université Paris 8 for a semester under the supervision of Professor Dr Brenda Laca. Her PhD viva took place in January, 2015, and from then on she dedicated herself to teaching English and Portuguese as foreign and additional languages. She was a teacher at the Languages Center Lexis at PUCRS, where she taught English to Brazilians and Portuguese to foreigners from many countries who were coming to PUCRS as part of exchange programs. She was also a substitute professor at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), where she taught textual reading and interpretation of scientific articles classes at the undergraduate level, and English language and culture at the extension level. Moreover, in 2015, she was also an English teacher at Cultura Inglesa language course, where she taught classes to a wide range of ages and proficiency levels. In July 2016 she was approved in a selection process to be awarded a full PNPD (National Post-Doctoral Program) - CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level -or Education- Personnel) scholarship at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), with the Post-Graduate Program of English, in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, under the supervision of Professor Dr Roberta Pires de Oliveira. The research project proposed and currently under development concerns the study and mapping of Brazilian Portuguese modality in contrast with English in terms of a unified semantic approach and pragmatic aspects in interface, mainly in their relation to the acquisition and processing of language in terms of teaching and learning of Brazilian Portuguese and English as foreign and additional languages. She aims to constrast, thus, these two languages, seeking as well theoretical and applied pedagogical contributions. Alongside her research development, she currently teaches at UFSC at the extension level (English as a foreign language), the undergraduate level of Portuguese and at the post-graduate level of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

É graduada em Letras - Licenciatura Plena em Inglês e Respectivas Literaturas pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (2007). Em 2009, ingressou com bolsa CNPq no curso de Mestrado em Letras da PUCRS com área de concentração em Linguística e concluiu, em janeiro de 2011, sua dissertação sobre a modalidade em linguagem natural, contrastando o português brasileiro, o inglês e o romeno na interface sintático-semântica. Aprovada em 1º lugar para o curso de Doutorado em Letras na PUCRS com dedicação exclusiva CNPq, desenvolveu novamente sob orientação da Profª Dr Ana Maria Tramunt Ibaños sua tese em Semântica Formal sobre condicionais epistêmicos e modalidade. Teve período de pesquisa sanduíche na Université Paris 8, onde complementou sua pesquisa com a Profª Dr Brenda Laca. Defendeu sua tese em janeiro de 2015, passando a se dedicar à prática do ensino de língua inglesa e portuguesa como línguas estrangeiras e adicionais. Foi professora do Centro de Idiomas Lexis (PUCRS), onde ministrou aulas de inglês e português para estrangeiros, foi professora substituta na Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saúde de Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), onde ministrou aulas de leitura e interpretação textual de artigos científicos em língua inglesa, e também foi professora de língua inglesa no curso livre de idiomas Cultura Inglesa, onde ministrou aulas para diversos níveis de proficiência e faixas etárias. Em julho de 2016 foi aprovada em seleção para bolsa PNPD - CAPES vinculada ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) para desenvolver sob a supervisão da Profª Dr Roberta Pires de Oliveira seu projeto no estudo de uma abordagem semântica unificada da modalidade e da imperatividade em linguagem natural e de seus variados aspectos pragmáticos, principalmente na aquisição e no processamento da linguagem em relação ao ensino e aprendizagem de português brasileiro e inglês como línguas estrangeiras e adicionais. Buscando contrastar, assim, essas duas línguas, objetivando também contribuições teórico-aplicadas ao ensino. Além do desenvolvimento de sua pesquisa, também ministrou aulas na extensão (inglês como língua estrangeira), na graduação em Letras - Português e na pós-graduação do Departamento de Línguas e Literaturas Estrangeiras. Desde 2018 é docente na Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST - Macau, China), ministrando disciplinas na graduação e pós-graduação em línguas portuguesa e inglesa, bem como seus respectivos estudos linguísticos e culturais.
