LIU HSU

Liu Hsu was born in Hunan, China. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), São José dos Campos, Brazil, in 1968 and 1970, respectively, and the Docteur d'Etat ès Sciences Physiques degree from the Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France in 1974. His doctoral research was developed at LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse. In 1975, he joined the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE) at the University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He is presently with COPPE's Electrical Engineering Department (PEE) in the area of Control Systems, Automation and Robotics. He has been PEE?s coordinator (1990-1993). His current research interests include adaptive control systems, variable structure systems, sliding mode control and observation, nonlinear systems dynamics and their applications to industrial process control, industrial robotics, terrestrial and underwater service robotics. He published over 80 refereed Journal papers and 200 refereed Conference papers. He supervised over 20 PhD and 50 MSc students. Since 1990 he has been a Fellow 1-A. He was elected member and then President of the Electrical Engineering Advisory Committee of the CNPq - Brazilian Council for Research Development (1987-1990). By 1999, he proposed the creation of the Control and Automation Engineering Course at the UFRJ, which has now been a successful initiative for more than a decade. Liu Hsu is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC, 2002) and of the Brazilian National Academy of Engineering (ANE, 2013). He was awarded the title of Commander (2005) and Grand Cross (2008) of the Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit. He is a founding member of the Brazilian Society of Automatics (SBA- the Brazilian IFAC-NMO). He chaired the 3rd Brazilian Conference of Automatics, Rio de Janeiro, in 1980. He served as member and President of the Superior Council of SBA (1984-1990). He was an Associate Editor of the SBA scientific journal "Controle & Automação", of the IET-Control Theory and Applications, and of the IEEE CSS Control Systems Magazine. Presently he is an Associate Editor (Engineering Sciences) of the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Liu Hsu is a Senior Member of the IEEE Control Systems Society. He is also a member of the IEEE CSS Technical Committee on Variable Structure and Sliding Mode Control. He received the title of Professor Emeritus of COPPE-UFRJ in 2017.
