Mariane Garcia Unanue
I am a Brazilian researcher, professor and architect who is passionate about the academic environment. It has been 5 years since I defended my PhD and I have been working with research since, collaborating with researchers from other institutions. Recently, I was a Senior Resident Researcher at Politecnico di Milano Design Department (2021-22). My teaching activities as Assistant Professor are at the Department of Design, History and Theory at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU-UFJF), and as Permanent Professor at the Built Environment Graduate Program (PROAC-UFJF). I have participated within my institution's commissions as a member of the Research Advisory Committee of Applied Social Sciences, the Docent People Permanent Committee and the College Board of FAU. I also take part at the editorial committee of the Brazilian journals Transverso (UEMG) and Tríades em Design (PUC-Rio/UFJF), collaborating with the Argentinean journal Foroalfa, and working as an ad-hoc evaluator for peer-reviewed conferences, as CIM, SBQP and CINCCI. My non-traditional career path includes being an English teacher when I was still at college, graduating in Architecture and Urbanism (UFJF-1999) and holding a master degree in Social Memory (UniRio, CAPES Scholarship 2005), an MBA in Marketing and Business (UFJF-2012) and a PhD in Architecture (Proarq-UFRJ, CAPES Scholarship-2016). Dedicating myself to the academia since 2002 (Architecture and Urbanism, UFJF), I also was a professor at the graduate course of Interior Architecture (UFJF, 2013-2015), coordinated the undergraduate course of Interior Design at CES/JF (2010-2013) and was a professor at the Architecture and Urbanism, and Interior Design courses at CES/JF (2008-2014). Along with the development of my academic career, I have also developed a professional career in the field of Architecture and Design. My 20 years of professional practice include being the founder of Architecture for Business Consultancy (2016-2017), a founding partner of Omni Studio Architecture Office (2004-2011), Design Consultant for SEBRAE-MG (Brazilian Service for the Support to Micro and Small Business, 2009-2011), and being awarded with PRIME (FINEP). My background of living in different cities, getting acquainted with new people, diverse cultures and climate (in different regions all over Brazil and once in Firenze, Italy) has taught me to respect and look for having as many experiences as I can in life. They stimulate my creativity, widen my perception of the world and allow me to know fantastic and distinct people, also helping me improve my communication and social skills in multicultural environments (I fluently speak Portuguese, English and Italian, and understand Spanish and French).
