Ulisses Coutinho Amaral
Adjunct Professor and Principal Conductor of the Music School of the State University of Minas Gerais (UEMG) since November 2017, Research Coordinator since April 2018, and vice-principal since 2020, the maestro and musicologist Ulisses Amaral received his PhD at the University of Sidney and graduated with first class honours at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
As a conductor Amaral has studied with distinguished conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Imre Pallò, Stephen Mould, Neil McEwam, Roberto Minczuk, André Cardoso, Andreas Weiss and Guillermo Scarabino.
At the same time, Amaral has been developing his musicological research, having as main foucus points Brazilian music, music performance, editorial processes in music, music and tecnology, ethonomusicology, and musical analysis.
He received the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) scholarship from 2001-2005 having developed research both in ethnomusicology and in music and tecnology.
In 2009, he was awarded the Sydney University International Scholarship (USydIS) and began a master in conducting with maestros Imre Pallò, Stephen Mould and Neil McEwan, having been awarded the James Kentley Memorial Scholarship and the Post Graduate Research Support Scheme from the University of Sydney.
In 2013, Amaral has finished his doctorate under the supervision of professors Dr. Petter McCallum and Dr. Kathleen Nelson, and received excellent reviews of his dissertation and critical edition of Oswald?s Symphony Op. 43: "NOT FROM HERE, NOT FROM THERE ? SINFONIA OPUS 43: HENRIQUE OSWALD (1852−1931): CRITICAL EDITION, CONTEXT AND COMMENTARY".
Amaral has published and presented his research in Brazil and worldwide, having had it praised by distinguished scholars such as Dr. Gerard Béhague, Dr. James Grier, Dr. Raymond Holden, Dr.Peter McCallum, Dr. Kathleen Nelson among others.
His critical edition has been performed by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in September 2014 and the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório in 2018.
Professor Adjunto e regente da Orquestra Sinfônica da Escola de Música da UEMG, desde novembro de 2017, coordenador de pesquisa entre 03/2018 2 12/2022, e vice-diretor entre 08/2020-12/2022, o maestro e musicólogo Dr. Ulisses Amaral recebeu seu PhD na Universidade de Sydney e se graduou em regência pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
Como regente, Dr. Amaral estudou com regentes renomados tais como Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Imre Pallò, Stephen Mould, Neil McEwam, Roberto Minczuk, André Cardoso, Andreas Weiss and Guillermo Scarabino.
Ao mesmo tempo, Dr. Amaral tem desenvolvido suas pesquisas musicológicas, tendo como pontos principais a música brasileira, performance musical, processos editoriais em música, música e tecnologia, etnomusicologia e análise musical.
Em 2009, venceu uma disputada seleção internacional e foi contemplado com a Sydney University International Scholarship (USydIS) do governo australiano e começou seu mestrado em regência com os maestros Imre Pallò, Stephen Mould and Neil McEwan.
Em 2010 foi promovido para o PhD e foi contemplado com a James Kentley Memorial Scholarship e a Post Graduate Research Support Scheme da Universidade de Sydney, tendo concluído seu doutorado em 2013 sob a supervisão dos professores Dr. Peter McCallum e Dr. Kathleen Nelson.
Sua tese de doutorado Sinfonia Op. 43 de Henrique Oswald: "NOT FROM HERE, NOT FROM THERE ? SINFONIA OPUS 43: HENRIQUE OSWALD (1852−1931): CRITICAL EDITION, CONTEXT AND COMMENTARY" recebeu excelentes críticas e sua edição crítica for interpretada pela Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira em setembro de 2014 e pela Orquestra Experimental de Repertório em 2018.
Dr. Amaral tem apresentado sua pesquisa no Brasil e no exterior, recebendo elogios de notáveis pesquisadores tais como: Dr. Gerard Béhague, Dr. James Grier, Dr. Raymond Holden, Dr.Peter McCallum, Dr. Kathleen Nelson entre outros.
