Cristiano Soleo de Funari

Cristiano Funari has a BSc in chemical engineering from the University of Campinas (Brazil), MSc in drugs and medicines from the University of São Paulo (Brazil), and a PhD in chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry at São Paulo State University (Brazil). He performed part of his PhD at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) and University of Salerno (Italy). He was a postdoc fellow at the Australian Center for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS) and at IQ/UNESP, applying concepts of green chemistry to the chemistry of natural products. He worked at Labiana Life Sciences (Spain) and Centroflora Group, where he developed and coordinated projects for innovation in natural products. He was selected as one of SciFinder Future Leaders in Chemistry in 2014. Prof. Funari is currently a professor at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the São Paulo State University, and collaborates with national and international institutions, such as The University of Manchester, the Future Industries Institute (University of South Australia), The Centre for Green Chemical Science (The University of Auckland), The University of Munster, and the University of Kiel. Prof. Funari is particularly interested in developing strategies and methods to make Natural Product Chemistry more adherent to Green Chemistry concepts, since he strongly believes that chemists of natural products should play a major role in developing a novel ecological paradigm in Chemistry. It seems to be essential for natural products chemistry to recapture its preeminent role in drug discovery, since Pharmaceutical Industry is strongly investing on greening their products and processes. He is the founder and coordinator of the Green Biotech Network, a network among young scientists from different campi and scientific institutions.

É graduado em Engenharia Química pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas, mestre em Fármaco e Medicamentos (Farmacognosia) pela Universidade de São Paulo, e doutor em Química (Química de produtos naturais) pelo Instituto de Química da Universidade Estadual Paulista (IQ-UNESP). Realizou parte dos seus estudos de doutoramento na Universidade de Salerno (Itália) e na Universidade de Genebra (Suíça). Desenvolveu projeto de pós-doutorado no Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS) e no IQ-UNESP, aplicando conceitos de química verde à química de produtos naturais. Foi selecionado na edição de 2014 como um dos SciFinder Future Leaders in Chemistry (distinção concedida pelo Chemical Abstracts Service, da American Chemical Society). Trabalhou nas empresas Labiana Life Sciences (Espanha) e no Grupo Centroflora (Brasil), coordenando projetos de inovação em parceria com universidades e institutos de pesquisa. É atualmente professor assistente na Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas da UNESP (FCA/UNESP), colaborando com pesquisadores de instituições nacionais e internacionais, como University of Manchester, Future Industries Institute (Australia), The Centre for Green Chemical Science (The University of Auckland), University of Munster e University of Kiel. Prof. Funari tem particular interesse no desenvolvimento de estratégias para tornar a Química de Produtos Naturais mais aderente aos conceitos de Química Verde e acredita fortemente que os químicos de produtos naturais deveriam desempenhar um papel mais importante no desenvolvimento de um novo paradigma ecológico em Química (isso lhe parece essencial para que a Química de Produtos Naturais recupere o seu papel proeminente no desenvolvimento de novos medicamentos, uma vez que a Indústria Farmacêutica vem investindo fortemente na sustentabilidade ambiental de seus produtos e processos). É coordenador do Green Biotech Network, uma rede de colaboração científica entre jovens professores de diferentes unidades da UNESP e de outras instituições de pesquisa.
