graduated in Computer Science from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1991), her Master's in Informatics from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1994) and her Ph.D.in Informatics from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1998). She is an full professor in the Computer Science Deparment at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, in which she has been a professor since 2006. Currently she is the Chair of the Deparment of Computer Science (UFMG). She spent a sabbatical year at the College of Information Science and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University from Augusto 2014 to July 2015. Her research is in Human-Computer Interaction and Collaborative Systems and her areas of interest include Semiotic Engineeering Theory and methods, interface evaluation, communicability, end-user programming mainly in collaborative systems setting. She was granted the "Outstanding HCI Career Award" by the Brazilian HCI Special Interest Group (CEIHC) of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) in 2022. She is active in the national and international communities of HCI and Collaborative Systems. , having been the coordinator of CESC from 2015 to 2019 and of CEIHC from 2006 to 2010, and full papers co-chair for ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work 2022/2023- Third Wave. She was SBCs representative in IFIP TC13- Human-Computer Interaction Group from 2013 to 2017, member of SIGCHI Executive Committee from 2001 to 2004, and participated in as member of many international and national program committees for HCI and CSCW conferences.She is currently one of the editors of Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) from Springer and member of the SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Committee since December 2022.

É professora titular da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, onde atua como docente desde 2006. Atualmente está na chefia do Departamento de Ciência da Computação da UFMG. Fez um pós-doutorado na Pennsylvania State University, no College of Information Systems and Technology de agosto de 2014 a julho de 2015. Sua pesquisa é em Interação Humano Computador e Sistemas Colaborativos, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: engenharia semiótica, interação humano-computador, avaliação de interfaces, comunicabilidade, design de interfaces e programação por usuário final. Recebeu o prêmio "Carreira Destaque em IHC" da Comissão Especial de IHC (CEIHC/SBC). Participa ativamente das comunidades nacionais e internacionais de IHC e Sistemas Colaborativos, já tendo atuado como coordenadora da CESC de 2015 a 2019 e da CEIHC de 2006 a 2010, coordenadora de programa do ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work 2022/2023- Third Wave. Ela também foi a representante da SBC na IFIP TC13- Human-Computer Interaction Group from 2013 to 2017, e membro do Comitê Executivo do SIGCHI de 2001 a 2004. Atua desde 2020 como uma das editoras da Communications in Computer and Information Science da Springer e desde de dezembro de 2022 da SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Committee.
