Possui graduação em Química (Bacharelado e Licenciatura) pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (1982) e pós-graduação aos níveis de mestrado e doutorado, sendo o primeiro pelo Departamento de Bioquímica da Universidade Federal do Paraná (1987) e o segundo junto ao Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biology da University of Ottawa, Canadá (1992). Foi professor concursado do Departamento de Química da UFPR no período de 1986 a 2019, onde chegou à posição de Professor Titular. Atualmente é Professor Sênior dos Programas de Pós-graduação em Química (que coordenou por suas gestões consecutivas) e em Engenharia Química. Tem experiência comprovada na área de aproveitamento tecnológico de recursos renováveis, com ênfase em química da madeira, biocatálise e na produção de biocombustíveis líquidos de primeira, segunda e terceira gerações. Foi Editor Associado do periódico Energy & Fuels da American Chemical Society de 2012 a 2022 e atua como membro do comitê editorial da revista BioResources (Raleigh, USA), Processes e Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (seção técnica de biotecnologia industrial). Ex-membro do Comitê Gestor do INCT Energia e Ambiente (INCT E&A) e colaborador do INCT do Bioetanol, é bolsista de produtividade em pesquisa do CNPq desde 1993, atualmente no nível 1B, com 6615 citações e um fator H igual a 45 em 05 de abril de 2023 na base Scopus (fator h-todos = 59 para 13106 citações e h-2018 = 37 para 5580 no Google Citations), além de consultor em várias áreas relacionadas ao desenvolvimento de estratégias de conversão de biomassa em biocombustíveis, insumos químicos e biomateriais. Ex-membro do Board of Directors da Earth Renewable Technologies (EUA), é consultor da GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, Alemanha) em projetos relacionados ao desenvolvimento e disseminação de tecnologias para a produção de hidrocarbonetos renováveis como bioquerosene de aviação e diesel verde. Dr. Ramos foi citado pela Stanford University como um dos 100.000 pesquisadores de maior influência do mundo (top 2%) nos últimos três anos, baseando-se no total de citações bibliográficas no ano anterior e ao longo de toda a carreira e, mais recentemente, pelo AD Scientific Index na posição 43541 do 2023 World Ranking for Scientists (posição 675 na América Latina, 454 no Brasil e 3 na UFPR) e pelo site Research.com na posição 95 do ranking de químicos mais influentes no Brasil, com base nos critérios divulgados no portal. O Dr. Ramos ainda atua como articulador do Novo Arranjo de Pesquisa e Inovação em Hidrocarbonetos Renováveis (NAPI-HCR) no Estado do Paraná.
Senior Professor at the Graduate Courses in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at UFPR, Dr. Luiz Pereira Ramos retired as Full Professor in Analytical Organic Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry of UFPR after 35 years teaching chromatography, spectrometry, and chemistry of renewable resources. B.Sc. in Chemistry (1978-82) at the Catholic University of Paraná, M.Sc. in Biochemistry at the Federal University of Paraná (1983-87) and Ph.D. from the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biology, University of Ottawa, Canada (1988-92), Dr. Ramos is member of the Brazilian Chemical Society and of the American Chemical Society. His research activities involve wood and carbohydrate chemistry, second and third generation biofuels, biomass fractionation using advanced pretreatment technologies, heterogeneous catalysis, and several other topics within the main concept of sustainable biorefineries. He is the leader of many research activities in the areas of renewable resources and biofuels, with an H factor of 45 for a total of 6615 citations up until April 04, 2023 (Scopus) and an h-all index of 59 for 13106 entries in Google Citations. Also, he acted as one of the Associate Editors of the ACS journal Energy & Fuels (2012-2022) and served as ad-hoc consultant for several companies, leading international science journals and both national and international funding agencies. Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of BioResources (Raleigh, USA), Processes and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, he had a seat at the Board of Directors of Earth Renewable Technologies (Brevard, North Carolina, EUA) and is a trained consultant for GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, Germany) in projects related to the development and dissemination of technologies to produce renewable hydrocarbons such as sustainable aviation fuels and green diesel. Dr. Ramos was cited by the University of Stanford as one of the 100.000 most influencing researchers in the world (top 2%), based of the total bibliographic citations in 2019 and through one's entire carrier and, more recently, by the AD Scientific Index at the 43541 position of the World Ranking for Scientists (position 675 in Latin America, 454 in Brazil, and 3 in his home institution, UFPR), and by the Research.com portal as the 95th most influent chemist in Brazil. Recently, Dr. Ramos helped creating and is the current facilitator of the Fundação Araucária?s New Arrangement for Research and Innovation in Renewable Hydrocarbons (NAPI-HCR).
